"Pup"date- Month 2

We are rounding out month 2 with our puppy, Eleanore. Ellie for short.
She WANTS to be a good dog, but....she is still a rambunctious puppy :)

Ellie Hates:

  • Being Brushed
  • Being "patted" -only petting please. Don't you dare pat her on the head!
  • The word "no"
  • Putting a leash on her (I have to wrestle her every.single.time)

Ellie Loves: (Pretty much everything else that isn't those four things I just listed..)

  • Annie's Ice Cream
  • Licking toes!
  • Chewing cardboard boxes
  • Finn :)
  • People
  • Car rides
  • Going for walks (but not so much the leash)
  • Jumping on mom when she has nice clothes on...
  • Her pool
  • Putting her toys in the fire pit in the back yard
  • Pretending not to know what "go to bed" means

She has developed quite the personality. With the limited interaction she has had with other people- she seems to like women better than men.

She has lost one of her baby teeth (that we noticed anyways)

Relations with Atticus are...well..about the same if not progressing SLOWLY. Atticus will no longer leave the room she comes into- however he still wants nothing to do with Ellie. However (again), he makes sure that she sees him, so I think that he just wants to taunt her because Ellie WANTS to be his friend.  He likes to sit in the doorways of rooms so that he gets to hiss at her when she tries to go through the doorway.

He was sitting in the living room floor one day and Ellie came into the room, got her tennis ball, brought it over to him, dropped it and rolled it towards him with her nose. It was probably the most adorable thing EVER. Of course Atticus didn't appreciate the gesture and hissed and screamed at her. I smacked him for it and he ran away to pout. All the while, Ellie just looked at me like "whats wrong with HIM?"

She KNOWS HOW to: Sit, lay down, get up, shake and dance. Now, whether she will do those on command or not, who knows.

Her pool is the GREATEST THING EVER!!

She just doesn't understand why we won't let her in the house after she rolls around in the pool though.. wet dogs belong in the house, right?

We have had to be gone for a few weekends the past month, and she has done wonderfully with someone else coming and checking on her.  She's a mess right now, but I think she will be a very good dog when she is grown.

Wildlife In Need, Inc.--A day trip to remember

My favorite photo from today- What a beauty she is!

Yesterday was my/our (very anticipated) road trip to Indiana to visit Wildlife In Need, Inc. I had found this place online earlier this year and last week I decided that it was time for us to go. Who wouldn't want to play with baby tigers?! I bought myself and Micah each a ticket ($35 a person) and talked Kourtney and Noah into accompanying us. Wildlife In Need is located in Charlestown, Indiana, which is about a 3 hour drive from Mt. Vernon.

I will say though, for my Illinois/Missouri friends- if you are looking at going: Charlestown is on EASTERN time. So keep that in mind, the time is an hour ahead of ours! I'm glad that Kourtney pointed that out yesterday, because I might not have thought about that, and we would have showed up an hour late and missed our session time. Also, their website says not to trust your GPS once you get into Charlestown, Indiana because of the gravel roads not being registered...but we had no problems with ours. My phone GPS took us right there, but I had the directions from the website ready just in case.

We started our road trip off well, but some of us have the bladder capacity of a toddler, so we had to find a rest stop just over the Indiana state border. Naturally, any time we stop, we have to Pokemon Go! (Stop 1)

Anyways, WIN (Wildlife in Need) has many exotic animals, not just Tigers. In our hour and a half session, we got to see foxes, wolves, monkeys, an African hog, and a jackal. On our way into the session, we walked past birds, lemurs, and two turtles.

Here is a photo of one of them yawning :)

The first part of the session, you get introduced to the different animals and get to learn a little bit about them. We have a ton of pictures to go through. It was hard because these animals literally run around the room and you have to be quick on the draw, or else they are gone. Especially with the monkeys and the foxes. Micah was quick enough to snap a picture of the monkey sitting on my head.

And also with the silver fox getting ready to crawl in my lap..he was so soft and I think he even purred a little bit..that or he was hissing at me, I couldn't tell.

When they finally brought out the tigers (there were 5 cubs), everyone was so excited. The cubs all stayed in the front of the room, as if waiting for something. As if on cue, here came one of the staff members with 5 bottles. The cubs were all eyes on those bottles, and Micah was lucky enough to be handed one! He had two cubs fighting on him over who got the bottle, and unfortunately I couldn't get any good pictures because the handler was between me and Micah, and we weren't allowed to stand up and walk around while the animals were running free. So, the photo below is the only one I got of Micah feeding the cub. You can't see his face, but I enjoy the reaction on the man sitting next to him :) :)
As I mentioned, we have a ton of pictures, so I am going to just let them do the talking.

The pictures don't quite do it justice, and many of ours are blurry because the animals don't sit still very long. I think our session would have been more enjoyable if the children near us would have behaved a little bit better (This is why they asked that you NOT bring any children under the age of 5!) , and you can see in several of the photos just how crowded the small room was.. I guess summer is a pretty busy time for them. (And we chose a Saturday instead of a day during the week..)

As I mentioned we had 5 rambunctious cubs in our session, Micah managed to get a picture of 4 of the 5: 3 of the 4 of the orange tigers and the white one. He also got a great picture of the wolf cub!

Even after visiting, I still don't know a whole lot about Wildlife in Need, Inc. We learned that they are a non-profit organization, and at least part of their mission is to rescue and rehabilitate animals in need. For instance, we were told during our session that they currently have a barn owl that fell out of the nest too early and couldn't get back up. So when it was found, it was dehydrated and malnourished, so the founder/owner, who is a master falconer, is working on getting him nursed back to health. So part of the animals on the property are going to be released back into the wild, but we get the impression that the other part of the animals are just pets. They made mention that they have a 19 year old tiger, who the owner has had since he (the tiger) was only 4 weeks old.

Here is a photo of the owner, getting some love from one of "his" cubs.

I will say, the animals all knew him. He popped his head up for a few minutes during the presentation and the monkey tried to jump to him. And when he came into the baby tiger playtime, the two cubs that were closest and saw him, both ran to him and jumped on him. One of them (playfully) bit him too :) He smacked her and told her that she knew better. It was neat to see him interact with the animals. but he didn't try to take away from the time we got to spend.

On our way back, we had to stop at the rest stop (Stop 2) for Pokemon...

Then we stopped in Poseyville, IN and ate at the Red Wagon.

My Catfish Po'Boy was delicious. The fish was fried lightly and the batter was crunchy but not greasy from being fried. Micah had a burger that he said was also excellent. I would eat there again!

We got about 20 miles down the road and saw another sign for a rest stop and at this point, I didn't fight it and just played Pokemon too.

All in all, a pretty fun way to spend our Saturday. And we got our state picture for Indiana to put on our map!

**Shout out to Micah for driving us the entire time and making a 6 hour round-trip drive. You rock! Thanks for going along with my crazy antics :) Love you!** --Since he reads my blog to see what I say about him, I thought I'd make this one good

Recipe Box: Sweet Teriyaki Chicken and Rice

Easy Sweet Chicken Teriyaki

So far this week, I have made this twice for dinner- we absolutely love it and it's so easy!

Serves: Probably 3?
(There's 2 of us and we have a container of leftovers)

INGREDIENTS:

2 or 3 thawed chicken breasts

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 tablespoon water

1/2 cup white sugar

1/2 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup cider vinegar (or just a little less than 1/4 cup)

1/4 teaspoon garlic salt

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

a pinch of black pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat oven to 475 degrees. Get a baking dish and line with aluminum foil. Trust me, it's worth it to not have to SCRUB the pan afterwards.

In a small sauce pan, combine the sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger, and pepper. Stirring frequently, bring to a boil. (Yes, it's going to smell..like vinegar.)

While sauce pan/ skillet is heating up, in a small dish, combine the corn starch and the water and set aside.

Once sauce is to a boil, turn the stove burner off and remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the corn starch/water and continue stirring until sauce thickens slightly.

Once sauce has thickened, take a few spoonfulls and dump it into the bottom of the pan.

Set the chicken in the pan, and pour a thin layer of sauce over the chicken.

Bake for about 35 minutes.

In the mean time, start boiling your white rice. We usually just do 1 cup of white rice to 2 cups of water.

After 35 mintues, take the chicken out of the oven and use a fork to turn the meat over. Pour another thin layer of sauce over the chicken and put back in the oven for another 20-30 minutes. (You don't want the chicken undercooked!)

When chicken is done, let it cool for about 5 minutes, then cut it into chunks. When we scoop the white rice onto our plates, we like to take the remaining sauce and sprinkle just a little bit into the rice for a bit of extra flavor.

Top with desired amount of cut chicken, and enjoy!

Illinois: Not Just Chicago (Part 2)

Today's adventure took us to the little town of Pontoon Beach, IL. Though the name would suggest otherwise, this is (unfortunately) NOT a beach town. Also, Illinois is right in the middle of the United States, land-locked on all sides. No oceans near here!  :(

A few weeks ago I was browsing the Groupon app, just looking to see if any of our local businesses in the St. Louis area had anything special going on. While browsing, I came across a Groupon for a Mastermind Vodka Distillery Tour. ..wait, what? We have a vodka distillery close?

This deal was for a two-person tour of the facility, samples of both the vodka and moonshine made in the distillery, AND a full 750ml bottle of their vodka to take with you. (one bottle per couple). The best part? It was $30. What's even better? I got it for $20.

Mastermind Vodka Distillery:

Upon our arrival at the distillery, my husband and I were greeted and seated in their "commons" room. They had several tables and chairs set up and music playing softly. We were the first ones there out of our group of 6, so while we waited, we were given a drink menu. You don't have to drink (because these do cost extra) but if you choose to, you certainly can. Once the other four got there, our tour guide took the drink orders and made them. When she brought the drinks, she also brought the free shot of Mastermind Vodka for us all to try. While everyone had a drink, she gave us a history of the company.

Turns out, this was the idea of a man who was an inventor. He had done a little bit of everything in his work-life from: Carpentry, Demolition, Electrician, and currently he runs the distillery and is also a train engineer. When everyone had finished their first round of drinks, (the group we were with were REALLY enjoying themselves) our tour guide brought out another round of drinks for our tour-mates..and our free shots of their moonshine. (Pictured above) I found the reasoning for the label fascinating, and I'm glad that our tour guide shared the story with us.

The CEO/Owner dedicated his moonshine to his father. His father was a pilot in World War 2, and piloted a bomber plane. The label is taken from his plane's nose-art. (Hence the 1930's style pin-up girl)

Our guide talked about how, when the owner started the company, he did it because he wanted to. He never expected to get big, he didn't expect anyone to WANT to take a tour, he just liked vodka and wanted to make his own. The company has two other employees, the girl that did our tour today and one other. (plus the owner) Their business has grown so fast that they can't keep up and had to buy a bigger building. They will be moved by the end of the year. The picture shows the majority of their distilling room. It's pretty small. They hand bottle and seal every bottle of vodka.

I had never toured a distillery before, so learning about the process was very interesting.

At the end of the tour, you get to seal the bottle of vodka that is included in the tour. I asked my husband to take a picture of me dipping our bottle into the wax...he took like 10 pictures. Here's 3 of them.

The tour took around an hour and a half- including the time taken for everyone to get mixed drinks.
I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is coming through the area. Currently, the building is small and not much to look at when you pull up. But the inside is surprisingly nice, and my husband and I definitely got our $20 worth. Mastermind Vodka is a top-shelf liquor and retails from $28-$35, depending where you buy it. That alone was worth more than our tour fee.

(Cat not included)  :)
